President George W. Bush, ladies and gentlemen.

Just a few ways that I would spend my $40 million prize money, if I were the President of the United States:

The tsunami death toll has just been raised to 225,000... I mean, I know there are no Weapons of Mass Distruction in Indonesia (or Iraq, for that matter...) ... and I know we as a country probably can't afford to do much help since our deficit is apparently so high that even our poor President has to settle with a measely $40 million inaugural party.... poor guy....

If the Republicans want to turn their cheeks on enviromental disasters like global warming any longer, all they need to do is visit northwest/central Indiana. The sketchy temperatures and weird weather should be proof enough for anyone that this is a serious problem that needs to be dealt with now, before it gets any worse. But I'm sure that $40 million worth of research wouldn't be-- in any way-- beneficial to environmental research. Nah.

Apparently, we're still in a "war" and American soldiers are still dying... it must make them feel super special that while they're risking their lives, the man at fault is gettin' down and dirty with Dick (Cheney). I mean... they don't need bullet-proof vests, better vehicles, or more technologically-up-to-date instruments NEARLY as much as Dub-Yah needs to schmooze with all his big-name pals...

There are people in the world who don't have anything to eat?? ... Really? Well, we can't help them... we need to help our starving Americans first. Actually, on second thought, we can't help anyone because our deficit is so grossly huge. Maybe all the starving people in the world and the little kids in Africa from those horrible commericials can take solace in the fact that at least President Bush can have a $40 million party. That should make them feel fulfilled, right?

I bet $40 million could do a lot for the nation's school systems.... it could help save the music and art programs that are necessary in the lives of well brought-up children... but I think a sum of money that large would be better suited to help inflate our President's already huge ego.

Fuck better healthcare, HMOs, reducing crime rates, cleaning up the streets, and giving better benefits to union workers. Bush got re-elected and needs a party. Woohoo!

I'm sure that street cops and detectives and security guards and firemen wouldn't be able to think of a single thing that $40 million could be used for. After all... they're not college-trained, they work shitty shifts, and they spend all day protecting people they will never meet and saving lives they will never know... really, who are they? Come on.

All right, I guess that's enough of that. Mostly because I'm really mad and it's sorta hard to type when I'm really mad.

I *do* understand that he is our President and that there are very nasty aspects to his job. I'm not trying to say that every day of his term is a $40 million picnic. Sure, he probably deserves some sort of a party... I mean, winning a presidential election *is* kind of a big deal... even if I didn't vote for him. But whatever happened to McDonald's parties??

A $40 million party would be a great time, indeed. But I really don't think it'd be hard to have a great time at a $40,000 party, either, or even a $4,000 one.

But, then again, I'm not a Republican.

Bush pledged $350 million dollars in aid to the victims of the tsunami, and the mobility of U.S. forces has enabled us to deliver aid to regions that would otherwise be unreachable.

And as for the price of the inaugeration, the only way that someone who voted against Bush would be happy with the ceremony is if it was John Kerry being sworn in.

$390 million would have been better than $350 million.

And... I didn't like Kerry enough that I would have been fine with him spending $40 million on his own inaugural party.

Hey Becky...It's Catherine (Allen then...Guzaski now) from Hanover...we haven't talked in a while, but I love reading your journal. You're such an excellently eloquent writer. One problem I have though...you can't say that Bush isn't doing enough about the tsunami effort, because my husband would be on his way home to me from deployment right now if it weren't for Bush sending his battle group over there to help out. I'm being personally effected by Bush's 'doing something'. I'm not bitter, I'm glad that Dave gets to be a part of the relief effort of quite possibly the biggest disaster we'll ever see in our lives. These guys are having to witness devestation that some of us could never even imagine. But who was the first nation to jump up and volunteer thier help and funds? Good ole US of A....lead by G Dubya. He's not so bad as everyone makes him out to be. Every president is gonna have thier faults. There's no way to make everyone happy. I'm pretty sure that every president has had a huge and expensive inauguration...but I will agree that spending $40 million seems a bit unreal to me.
Congrats in advance for the upcoming graduation! I hope you're well and I wish you the best in all of your endeavors.

CATHERINE!!!... Guzaski?! Wow! I had no idea that you married Dave! Congratulations to both of you! It's so good to hear from you!

Thank you so much for the compliment... I really appreciate it, especially coming from my very talented voice-counterpart :)

I'm very sorry to hear about Dave's absense... I didn't know that he is in the service. I actually just found out that Charles Pendleton got shipped off to Iraq, too... so many people that we grew up with.

I'm so happy for the two of you, though, and you seem to be very well-adjusted to him being gone... you were always so cool about things like that.

We should get together sometime! It's been forever since I've seen you. Why don't you send me an email with how I can contact you?? My address is rsh4164@saintjoe.edu, or you can IM me at pjwshlst. I hope to hear from you really soon, Catherine!!!

Take care of yourself, and tell Dave I said hello when you talk to him. :)

Tru dat!

If Kerry had won and spent that much money, the Republicans and neocons would be all in an uproar, but they didn't say squat about that kind of extravagant spending for their side.

But then, these are the same people that lambasted Clinton for 8 years, then turn around say you have to support the president no matter what or your not a patriot once GWB was in office.
